Flood ravages parts of Ilorin

Flood has wreaked havoc in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, as some residents have lost some properties while farmers also lost many fish to the Asa Dam river.

Our correspondent learnt that the rain, which started at dawn, made the Asa Dam river overflown its bank, while residents whose houses were situated along the banks were thrown out by the flood.

Investigation by our correspondent showed that residents at Aduragba, at Ipata market areas, Obo road areas, Osere areas, in Ilorin, were disturbed by the night rainfall.

A farmer, identified as Mr. Moses, whose pond were located near Asa Dam River, along Obo road, Ilorin lost all his grown cat fish to the flood.

Speaking with journalists, a victim, at Number 1 and 4, Saka-Saka street, Odota, Motunrayo Olanipekun, said the flood occurred around 3 a.m. and all the walls collapses.

She said the heavy rain and erosion caused the flood, stressing that many residents lost their property while some houses were damaged.

The victim said the state government should do something to remove those people who have makeshift shops in the area, which blocked some gutters, stressing that three cars and household items got destroyed by the flood.

Another victim, Kehinde Jimoh David said, “We just discovered that there was heavy flooding of water in the rooms and we were confused. We had to quickly evacuate our children outside. Before we knew what was happening, there was thunder strike, which broke the fence and the smashed vehicles parked outside.

“There was no place for us to go. We started knocking at people’s doors, just to find a place to stay. It is disastrous; we do not know what to call this or what to do”, he lamented.
