Glasgow 2026: Ogazi wins historic Men’s 400m gold, Onojuvwevwo claims bronze

History was made on Saturday morning as Samuel Ogazi became the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games 400m title after producing a sensational championship performance in Glasgow, powering away from the field to claim Nigeria’s 10th gold medal of the Games.
In a controlled race, Ogazi approached the final bend brilliantly, asserting control as he entered the home straight before pulling away from his rivals to secure the Commonwealth title in a new Games Record.
Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago claimed the silver medal, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene completed the podium with bronze.
The victory represents a landmark moment for Nigerian athletics, with Ogazi becoming the country’s first male Commonwealth Games champion over 400m. His gold also took Team Nigeria to 10 gold medals and 19 medals overall at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Right after Ogazi, Nigeria’s medal tally quickly climbed to 20 after Ella Onojuvwevwo delivered another memorable performance in the women’s 400m final.
Onojuvwevwo clocked 51.00 seconds to claim the bronze medal and, in the process, became the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s 400m since Fatima Yusuf claimed silver in 1994, ending a 32-year wait for Nigeria to return to the podium in the event.
Nigeria also secured places in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay finals following impressive performances in the heats.
The women’s quartet of Miracle Ezechukwu, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Olayinka Olajide and Prestina Ochonogor showed tremendous composure to recover from a difficult baton exchange and finish second in their heat in 43.93 seconds, securing automatic qualification for the final. Jamaica won the heat in 42.74 seconds.
Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m quartet of Chidera Ezeakor, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Favour Ashe produced an impressive display to win their heat in 38.46 seconds.
The Nigerians held off a strong Canadian quartet, which finished second in 38.53 seconds, while Australia placed third in 38.69 seconds, putting Team Nigeria firmly in the medal conversation heading into the final.
Team Nigeria will return for the evening session with three major relay opportunities as the men’s and women’s 4x100m teams compete in their respective finals, while Nigeria will also line up in the 4x400m final.
With 10 gold medals and 20 medals already secured, Nigeria will be gunning for three more Commonwealth titles as the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games enters its final stages.
