Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has paid N5 billion to settle another batch of 2,000 retirees of their gratuity and death benefits.
PEOPLES DAILY reports that this is the third batch the governor had paid gratuity and death benefits since assuming power in May, 2023, amounting to N16 billion.
Speaking at the disbursement ceremony on Thursday at the government house, governor Yusuf said his administration has fulfilled its campaign promise towards addressing the plight of pensioners in the state, by releasing a total of N16 billion in 19 months to settle outstanding pension benefits.
Governor Abba Kabir noted that the disbursement of this N5 billion marks the third phase of his administration efforts to alleviate the suffering of pensioners, who had been denied their benefits for eight years during the immediate past government.
He said during his campaign in 2023,he vowed to address the issue of pension backload , which had led to the loss of lives among pensioners waiting for their gratuities and pensions.
The Governor said immediately after assuming office, his administration injected over N6 billion to settle part of the backlog, followed by an additional N5 billion.
The governor described the payment as a “moral obligation” and assured pensioners that the funds would be credited directly into their bank accounts to ensure accountability.
He also announced an upward review of pension benefits from N5,000 to N20,000 to cushion the economic hardship faced by pensioners.
“This is a historic day in our efforts to revive and reform pension scheme that was allowed to be perennial by the immediate past government. Pensioners were made to suffer.
“But our administration has fulfilled its promises, settling over 5,000 retirees,” he said.
Speaking earlier, Godswil Abumesi, National President of the Union of Pensioners, represented by Assan Sambe Thomas commended Governor Yusuf for settling the backlog of pensioners and urged other state governments to emulate the gesture.
“What Abba is doing is unprecedented in the history of pension in Kano and Nigeria. What you’re doing is not happening in other states currently. We must commend you for this. Your love for senior citizens is immeasurable.This is unprecedented and unbelievable.
“No pensioner in Kano takes home less than N20,000monthly pension. I urge other state governors to come and learn from Kano “to come and see 7 wonders of pension in Kano,” hensaid.
The Head Service Alhaji Abdullahi commended the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of pensioners, stating that the review of pension benefits demonstrates the appreciation and honor given to the services rendered by pensioners.
