Group Commends Tinubu’s Education Sector Reforms

The Hope Alive Initiative (HAI) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as significant efforts to transform Nigeria’s education sector through policies and interventions aimed at expanding access to higher education and improving infrastructure in tertiary institutions.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Press and Communications, Ernest Omoarelojie, the group praised the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the Federal Government’s recent approval of N2 billion each for federal universities to develop 500-bed hostel facilities, describing the initiatives as evidence of the administration’s commitment to strengthening education and human capital development.

The group noted that the operationalisation of NELFUND represents a major milestone in addressing financial barriers that have long prevented many Nigerian students from accessing tertiary education.

According to HAI, the interest-free student loan scheme is designed to ensure that qualified students are not denied educational opportunities due to financial constraints.

“For decades, access to higher education has been hindered by financial challenges, leaving many talented youths unable to pursue their academic aspirations. NELFUND directly addresses this challenge by ensuring that no student is denied education because of lack of funds,” the statement said.

The group added that the initiative goes beyond tuition financing by creating equal opportunities for students from different socio-economic backgrounds to acquire knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.

HAI also welcomed the Federal Government’s hostel development intervention, describing it as a timely response to the longstanding shortage and poor condition of student accommodation in public universities.

It said improved hostel facilities would provide a more conducive learning environment and enhance students’ academic performance and competitiveness.
The organisation expressed confidence that the intervention would usher in a new era of accountability and urged university authorities to ensure transparent and effective utilisation of the funds.
It also called on tertiary institutions to expedite the refund of school fees paid by students who later benefited from the student loan scheme.

The group maintained that the administration’s investments in education align with its Renewed Hope Agenda and would contribute to building a knowledge-driven economy by producing graduates equipped with relevant academic and practical skills.

HAI further urged Nigerians to support the government’s efforts, stating that the ongoing reforms have set a new benchmark for educational development and could significantly strengthen the country’s human capital base if sustained.
