The Northern Unity Front (NUF), has criticized former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent efforts to position himself as a defender of northern values, accusing him of abandoning those very principles during his time in power.
The group recalled his dismissive stance on the legacies of revered northern leaders, including Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and other icons of Nigerian unity.
In a statement, NUF Chairman Comrade Yusuf Umar urged northern leaders and constituents to reflect on El-Rufai’s tenure, which he described as marked by authoritarianism and a disregard for the region’s political heritage.
Umar said: “El-Rufai governance style, characterized by a boldness that sometimes bordered on hubris, has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many who once saw him as a potential beacon of hope for the North.
“His self-aggrandizing statements and actions, particularly during the deaths and political declines of key figures such as President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and President Goodluck Jonathan, showcased a profound disregard for the values of empathy and respect that are deeply entrenched in our culture.
“In his quest for relevance, El-Rufai has made attempts to rewrite his narrative, seeking validation from the very leaders and constituents he once alienated. His previous disdain for the legacies of our founding fathers, including the revered Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and other icons of Nigerian unity, has not been forgotten.
“His dismissive remarks about these leaders, who fought tirelessly for the unity and progress of our nation, reveal a dangerous tendency to prioritize personal ambition over collective memory and respect.
“The Northern Unity Front firmly believes that true leadership is rooted in humility and a deep understanding of the historical and cultural context of one’s constituency. El-Rufai’s authoritarian governance style, which sidelined dissenting voices and undermined democratic principles, has led to a significant erosion of his political capital.
“His recent attempts to don the mantle of a savior are not only disingenuous but also an affront to the values that our region holds dear. As he seeks redemption in a shifting political landscape, we urge El-Rufai to reflect on the lessons of his past. Power is ephemeral, and those who wield it must do so with a profound awareness of the relationships that bind us together as a society.”
The group called on northern leaders to prioritize collective progress over personal ambition, honor the legacies of past heroes, and uphold values of unity, respect, and humility.
He added, “The Northern Unity Front remains committed to advocating for true leadership that honors the sacrifices of our past leaders and fosters a political culture that is inclusive, respectful, and progressive.
“We invite all northern constituents to join us in holding our leaders accountable and ensuring that the values of our great region are upheld and cherished.”
