The foundation of our faith as Muslims is character. Acts of worship without good character are like a tree with weak and shallow roots. Such a tree may appear tall and vibrant, but it cannot withstand the storms of life. Similarly, a Muslim may observe the outward forms of religion, but if he is without noble character, then, the essence of faith is absent in him.
This is why the Prophet (SAW) is praised by Allah (SWT) for his exemplary character in Surah Al-Qalam (Q68:4) where Allah (SWT) says: And indeed, you are of great moral character.
The Prophet (SAW) himself also emphasized the centrality of character in Islam when he said:
‘Innamā bu‘ithtu li’utammima makārimal akhlāq’. Meaning; I was only sent to perfect noble character.
He (SAW) also said: ‘The most beloved of you to me, and the closest to me on the Day of Judgment, are those of you with the best character’.
These clearly goes to show that our religion is not solely about rituals or physical expressions of worship. Islam is a complete way of life in the sense that our Salāh, Sawm, Zakāh, and other acts of Ibādah must reflect in our dealings with others, whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims, even with animals and the environment.
True devotion is seen in how we treat others, in our honesty, in our kindness, in our patience, and in our humility.
We must always remember that Allah (SWT) uses people as a means to dispense His grace, mercy, and provisions. Therefore, our relationships with others and the way we treat them should always reflect this divine reality.
No doubt, the bedrock of every solid relationship is character. For us as Muslims, good character is not optional, it is rather a sacrosanct duty and a non-negotiable aspect of our faith. It is the true measure of our sincerity in worship. That is why it is often said that:
Religion without character is nothing but deception, and a man without character is recklessly alive.
Let us, therefore, strive to build meaningful relationships and guard them jealously. Let’s be mindful of our words and our tone when speaking to others. Let’s continually work on our characters by refining our attitudes and conducts. Always keep in mind that Allah (SWT) uses people to bless people. So, treat everyone you meet with dignity, for you never know through whom your next blessing will come.
May Allah (SWT) beautify our hearts with sincerity, adorn our character with mercy and patience, and make us among those whose actions reflect the light of true faith.
May Allah (SWT) grant us the ability to follow the noble example of the Prophet (SAW) in both worship and conduct, and may Allah make us among those beloved to Him and closest to His Messenger (SAW) in the Hereafter.
