As part of activities marking this year’s World Environment Day, the President of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria (HEKAN) and environmental advocate, Rev. Dr. Amos G. Kiri, has called on Nigerian students to take the lead in championing environmental stewardship in the face of the worsening effects of climate change.
Rev. Kiri made the call while delivering a keynote address at a seminar organized for students of Tubase International Schools in collaboration with an international organization in Kaduna, themed: “Environmental Stewardship in the Light of Climate Change: Promoting Cleanliness in Public Spaces, Workplaces, and Homes.”
Rev. Kiri emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability and the need to raise awareness, especially among the younger generation. He stressed that “the welfare of the Earth is directly tied to our well-being,” urging students to play active roles in protecting their surroundings.
He highlighted the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal, linking it to increased flooding and other environmental hazards. Rev. Kiri called for a shift in mindset, urging students to embrace tree planting and discourage deforestation, describing them as vital actions in mitigating climate change.
