International Criminal Court (ICC) has praised President Muhammadu Buhari’s staunch support for global justice by his support to the war crime court.
This was made known yesterday in Abuja by the ICC President, Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji while on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama.
Eboe-Osuji noted that President Buhari’ support to the world justice body is unparallel and should be commended.
He said that Nigeria stood with the court even when there was a coordinated continental perception of the court as being targeting Africans.
He however, called for greater collaboration with the world body.
Minister of foreign, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama who spoke earlier welcomed Mr. Ebuo-Osuji and congratulated him on his election as the ICC President.
Onyeama said that President Buhari being a believer of rule of law will always support the court to entrench global justice.
He cleared the air on Rome Statutes of ICC saying that it did not give the court right to arrest any leader but allows African countries to use their own mechanism to try a political leader if need be, and can only turn to the court when they don’t have the structure to affect this.
On the report that the court is being racist and going after African leaders in 99 percent of the cases it is investigating, Onyeama said that we should focus more on whether justice has been served, human right violated.
“We should also try to ascertain whether the court is right in investigating them and stop looking at where they are from” he said.
