The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu has made strong case for the Nigeria Police Force to be in charge of needs assessment in the proposed amendment of the Police Trust Fund Act Amendment.
He made this point at a meeting of Police management and the Senate Committee on Police Affairs at the Senate on Monday.
Specifically referring to the security challenges facing the country, the IGP said: “the police are the ones who know what they need at every particular time. For example, the situation we have now, you may think we need more rifles, you may think we need aircraft, but we are the ones who wear the boots, we know where it pinches.”
The proposed amendment before the Senate committee on Police Affairs recommended that the Minister of Police Affairs would submit the needs assessment for the Nigeria Police.
At a public hearing on the Police Trust Fund Act Amendment Bill 2026 last Tuesday, representative of the Police kicked against the minister making the needs assessment for the Police.
The IGD representative at the public hearing also talked about Police membership of the board and even be the chairman.

However, after the meeting with Senate committee, the IG said “the issues have been sorted out”.
Going down memory lane IGP said “I want to take your mind back to the creation of the security trust fund. Yes, then one of the most prominent security trust funds we had around in Nigeria then was the Lagos State Security Trust Fund. And this was visited, studied before the police trust fund came into existence.
“Before a vehicle is brought in Lagos, the commander of the Rapid Response Corps will be consulted, who will tell them what he needs and the kind of vehicles he needed for this operation. At the same time, to the police security trust fund as well, we argued that the police should be in charge of the need assessment”.
The chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, senator Abdulhamid Malam-Madori said at the Monday meeting assured the Police management that the committee will come up with a law that will make them succeed in fighting insecurity in the country.
