Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has called on officers of the Nigeria Police Force to fully embrace the proposed transition to state policing, emphasizing that the Federal Government has committed to implementing the new security model.

Speaking at a one-day workshop on state policing, the IGP highlighted the initiative as a pivotal security reform that will redefine law enforcement in Nigeria.

He noted that police leadership must actively educate personnel across all commands to clarify the objectives of the reform, correct widespread misconceptions, and align the Force with the national policy.

Disu stressed that state policing is a broader Federal Government initiative designed for national benefit, rather than an internal police project.

He added that to contribute meaningfully to the national discourse, the Force formed a committee that developed a comprehensive reference framework in just 17 days, supplementing progress made by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

According to him, the framework draws on comparative studies of decentralized policing models in federal nations, including the United States, India, and Pakistan.

He opined that the draft remains open for refinement, incorporating insights from retired Inspectors-General of Police and ongoing feedback from active personnel.

The IGP commended Professor Olu Ogunsakin, Director-General of the National Institute of Police Studies, for his leadership in shaping the proposed structure.

He urged officers to engage constructively with the proposal to ensure a seamless and effective transformation of Nigeria’s security framework.
