Institute, AfDB, others partner for Islamic banking workshop in Ilorin

All is now set for Islamic banking experts from across countries of Africa to gather in Ilorin, Nigeria to brainstorm and explore current issues in Islamic banking and financial products, with a focus on the experiences of particular African countries in terms of regulation, supervision, systemic risk measures, stress testing, counterparty risk, opportunities and challenges.

A statement by the Senior Editor/ Information & Knowledge Services Division, Islamic Research & Training Institute (IRTI), Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Habeeb Idris Pindiga, has disclosed Pindiga said that the Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) of the Islamic Development Bank Group and the African Development Bank (AfDB) are to jointly organize a workshop on the development of Islamic Banking in Africa to be held in Ilorin, Nigeria.

The event, which is scheduled for January 6 – 8, 2015, according to him, is being organized in collaboration with the Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin and the Department of Islamic Law, University of Ilorin.

He said experts in Islamic banking, regulation, and financial economics are expected to be at the workshop to take stock of current academic research, policies, practice and development of Islamic banking in Africa.

“The workshop is also to explore current issues in Islamic banking and financial products, with a focus on the experiences of particular African countries in terms of regulation, supervision, systemic risk measures, stress testing, counterparty risk, opportunities and challenges.

“The selection committee of presentations will give priority to well-researched contribution by academics, regulators and practitioners of Islamic banking and finance from different African countries and from those who show considerable familiarity with the development of Islamic banking in Africa,” the statement concluded.
