As Nigerians yesterday marked the 21st anniversary of the June 12 1993 elections, presumed to be won by Chief Moshood Abiola, the Ogun state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has described Chief Abiola as the strong pillar of Nigeria democracy, calling on the federal government to recognise him as the nation’s hero of democracy.
Amosun, who said this during a special prayer held to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was annulled by the then military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, said although the federal government had started the process of recognizing Abiola for his numerous contributions to the nation’s democracy, noted that what was important was to make the people comfortable.
The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the Ogun state government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa extolled the virtues and democratic credentials of Abiola, pointing out that “if Abiola had been alive today, he would have been in the All Progressives Congress”.
