The Kano State Government has opened applications for communities requiring boreholes across the Greater Kano area as part of efforts to ease water shortages during the ongoing rehabilitation of major water infrastructure projects.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.

Hashim said the initiative is aimed at providing immediate relief to communities facing acute water shortages while the state government undertakes the rehabilitation of key water facilities.

According to him, the intervention is part of the 166 solar-powered boreholes approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, which are expected to deliver about 4.14 million litres of water daily.

He noted that the project reflects the administration’s commitment to improving access to clean and safe water for residents of the state.

The commissioner explained that although the government is pursuing long-term solutions through the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, Challawa Water Treatment Plant and the Goron Dutse Water Reservoir Complex, short-term measures are necessary to support communities currently experiencing water supply challenges.

Hashim said work on the rehabilitation projects is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed within eight months of commencement. He added that the projects would significantly improve water supply across Kano metropolis and surrounding communities upon completion.

He urged community members, leaders and stakeholders to submit applications through the ministry’s official borehole application platform, noting that the information gathered would enable the government to identify and prioritise the most affected communities.

Applicants are required to provide basic information, including their names, contact details, local government areas, wards, community names, availability of functional boreholes and the estimated number of beneficiaries.

The application form is available on the ministry’s official platform, kanowaterproject.com.

“The Kano State Government remains committed to ensuring equitable access to water resources and delivering sustainable solutions that improve the welfare and quality of life of all residents,” the statement said.
