The Korean Cultural Centre in Nigeria (KCCN) has trained Nigerian female artists on Korean paintings focusing on the works of a Korean National Painter, Park Soo Keun with the aim of boosting their skills.
Speaking during event in Abuja Monday, Jung Hayoon, an Independent Lecturer and member of Education Team of Museum of Modern Contemporary Arts in Korea said the Art training was to introduce Nigerian people to the works of Park Soo Keun and Korean painting which he greatly influenced.
Jung noted that Park Soo Keun was Korean National Painter born in 1914 and lived through a tumultuous period of history that profoundly impacted the lives of the Korean people, from the Japanese occupation, liberation, and the Korean War.
According to her, “Throughout it all, Park crafted his unique artistic world, earning him the status of the artist most recognized by Koreans today” she said.
She quoted Park saying “Some people criticize me for painting the same things, but it’s our life, how come they don’t see it?”
She noted that Park was often referred to as a “painter of commoner” as he often depicts ordinary people living in poverty, yet with vitality.
“In particular, he painted women working hard to provide for their families after the war”.
Continuing, Jung said Park used limited colors in his paintings, mainly yellow and brown, adding other colors where necessary.
Also speaking, Fatima Ringim an Atrist that participated in the training said she has been greatly inspired by the works of Park Soo Keun saying it was inspiring, interesting, exciting an eye opener for her improve in her paintings.
She said it gave her hope that she can actually build on her art skills
She said that Park Soo Keun evolved in his art and a whole museum named after him.
Ringim thanked Korean Cultural Centre for putting the event together saying that it has greatly exposed her to new ideas in art.
She said the experience gained would be used to widen her horizon on her own work of arts.
Aderogba Oluwaseyi, a Korean Language Interpreter, said the event was made possible as result of partnership with Museum of Modern Contemporary Arts in Korea in Korea to train some female artists under the auspices of Association of Female Artists in Nigeria who will be greatly influenced with the works of one of the famous Korean artists, Park Soo Keun who revolutionized painting in Korea.
Aderogba said they picked people of like minds to give them a different direction to the practice of art with the aim of horning their talents.
