Kuro-Wari foundation empowers 237 girls in Abuja

The KURO-WARI Global Foundation has reaffirmed its dedication to nurturing the next generation of female leaders as it marked the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child in Abuja.

The event, held at Redeemers Private Secondary School, Livingspring, Karu, brought together students, teachers, faith leaders and media professionals under the theme, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead.”

During the celebration, the Foundation donated sanitary pads to 237 female students aged between 9 and 17, while a team of 15 mentors led interactive sessions on confidence-building, leadership, and personal development.

The Founder of the Foundation, Barrister Miebaka Nyanabo, said the initiative reflected the organisation’s mission to mentor and inspire girls to become agents of social transformation.

“At KURO-WARI, we are passionate about raising the next generation of female leaders. Leadership begins with self-belief. When girls recognise their worth and potential, they can drive positive change in their schools, families, and communities,” she said.

Nyanabo outlined some of the Foundation’s flagship initiatives, including the Girls Connect Mentorship Programme, the ILEAD Leadership Training in partnership with the John Maxwell Foundation, and health education projects aimed at tackling period poverty and promoting menstrual hygiene in rural areas.

The Foundation’s Director and Matron, Dr Ibiene Nyanabo, underscored the role of faith-based values in guiding young girls through puberty and personal growth.

“Faith offers guidance, builds resilience, and helps girls understand that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. It gives them purpose and direction as they prepare for leadership,” she explained.

The Principal of Redeemers Private Secondary School, Pastor Cole Akintunde Michael, said the school remains committed to providing an inclusive environment where girls can thrive academically and emotionally.

“We ensure that our students, especially girls, are guided to make wise decisions and live by strong moral values. Creating a safe, welcoming environment helps them grow with confidence,” he stated.

Similarly, the School Counsellor, Ms Suliyat Segilola Tijani, called for a holistic educational approach that blends academics with emotional and leadership development.

“Educators should create supportive spaces where girls feel valued and heard. Integrating social-emotional learning into academics builds confidence, resilience, and empathy,” she said.

A media representative, Ms Sarafina Christopher, stressed the need for positive storytelling to challenge stereotypes and promote female leadership in Nigeria.

“Media narratives must highlight the strength, resilience, and potential of girls. Representation matters in changing mindsets,” she noted.

The mentorship sessions, divided into three age groups, focused on leadership, menstrual hygiene, and self-affirmation rooted in faith, with many participants echoing the verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
