Lassa fever: One killed, 5 hospitalised in Plateau

One person has died while five others were hospitalised yesterday following an outbreak of Lassa fever in Plateau state.

The outbreak of the disease was confirmed by the Deputy Director, Epidemiology in the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Raymond Juryit. He said there were cases of suspected Lassa fever in the state capital and Jingir town of Bassa local government of Plateau state where one person died and five others were hospitalised at Bingham Medical Center in Jos.

The Deputy Director however said the state government was taking necessary measures to prevent the spread of the disease as according to him, specimens have been taken for an experiment. He said, “We have already communicated with the ministry of health to help us with drugs for the treatment of the disease.”

He therefore advised people in the state to maintain clean environment and safeguard food items from rats and other carriers of the disease
