The Director, Public Health Department, in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Dr. Folasade Momoh, has restated the determination of the Administration to eliminate malaria from the territory through awareness on preventive measures.
Momoh made this known when she led a team on advocacy visit to the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) on the elimination of malaria.
Represented by the Deputy Director, Disease Control of the Department, Dr. Tali Buktap, the director said that AMAC had done well in providing access to health care services, especially in malaria control.
She, however, added that there was the need to do more in terms of data collection and logistics for effective delivery.
“We want AMAC to establish a budget line for malaria control in the local government areas, celebrate 2014 World Malaria Day and begin to expand the malaria control strategies.
“This will include other health centres, apart from the 15 global fund assisted health facilities in AMAC.
“This is to ensure that pregnant women are mobilised to attend ante-natal from where they will receive Intermittent Preventive Therapy (IPT) and Long Lasting Insecticide nets (LLINS),’’ she said.
According to her, awareness campaign will be carried out in the rural areas to improve the knowledge of the people on malaria preventive interventions, especially the usage of the LLINs.
Momoh, stressed that there was the need for the inauguration of role model care givers from members of the community during the malaria awareness creation.
She therefore called for AMAC’s support to ensure better delivery of preventive interventions against the elimination of malaria in the FCT.
In his remarks, the Chairman of AMAC, Micah Jiba, urged the team to continue to take adequate measures to eliminate malaria in the FCT.
Jiba was represented by Mrs. Josephine Nnodim, the Supervisory Councilor for Health in AMAC.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the roll back malaria team is on advocacy visits to the six area council chairmen in the FCT on the need for malaria elimination intervention programmes. (NAN)
