The National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has won a case it instituted against a counterfeit dealer, who specializes in faking various alcoholic drinks.
In a statement issued yesterday, the accused, Mr. Sunday Okeke was arraigned before a federal high court in Port-Harcourt, after being discovered and arrested at the Orumumafi Mami Market of the Nigerian Air force Port-Harcourt for illegal production of fake and unregistered products like Bacchus tonic wine, King Edward, Centurion and Glen Garry Gold Blended Scotch.
The case which has been on for a while was finally brought to an end yesterday, when Okeke was found guilty of a four-count charge of violating Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome processed Food Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as judged by the presiding judge, Justice R.M Aikawa.
The accused was further sentenced to 11 years imprisonment or pay the sum of N600 000(six hundred thousand naira) only.
The implication of the victory by NAFDAC was to also send a strong signal to those who have refused to desist from producing fake and counterfeit products as the NAFDAC boss vows to rid Nigeria of such elements.
