NASS siege: NUJ condemns Police action

The national president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), comrade Muhammad Garba, has described the onslaught on the national assembly by the Police as threat to democracy, and that the action has given a bad name to Nigeria in the comity of nations.

Speaking to journalists at the NUJ press centre in Kano State, yesterday, Garba wondered why such a despicable acts should be perpetrated by those who are supposed to provide cover and protection to members of the national assembly.

He stressed that the nation’s democracy is almost on the brink at a time when the constitution of the country is supposed to be safeguarded by all.

According to him, the law makers, as representatives of the people, have the constitutional right to discharge the responsibility bestowed on them, lamenting that the Police institution had allowed itself to be used as a tool to suppress a popular will.

He however stated that attacks of this magnitude have become a recurrent decimal under the present political dispensation in the country, adding that the NUJ, is deeply irked by the decimal turn of events.

On the agitation for the extension of the state of emergency in the northeastern region of the country, national president further revealed that, the whole issue has been politicised.

He however stressed that the issue of security is sacrosanct to the nation’s development, and that it must not be premised on the altar of primordial sentiment.

He counselled politicians in the country to play their game according to the rules, adding that no one would ever be safe in a situation where  politicians chose to thread the path of dishonour.
