NEMA calls for cooperation among disaster managers

Date:

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called on the agencies in-charge of management in the country to be focused in discharging their duties rather than engage in unnecessary rivalry during emergency situations.

The agency’s North West Zonal Coordinator, Alhaji Musa Ilallah stated this during a workshop titled “emergency response: Policy, Coordination and Procedures in a mass casualty” in Kaduna, recently.

Ilallah, who urged stakeholders to support NEMA in its mandate of providing succour to the distress at times of disasters, said “as stakeholders in disaster management our duty is to respond to emergency to affected victims, the challenges have so far been enormous, other collaborating entities view NEMA as rivals which has hindered our mandated tasks.”

“The workshop was organized to share experience among stakeholders, fine tune and come up with a blue print to collaborate effectively and efficiently during operational scenarios giving references to the problems experience during last twin blasts in the state, ” he said.

He added “there is the need to avoid such problem so as to strengthen our capacity to respond to disaster appropriately. It will be good for us as stakeholders to look at government policy on emergency response to see how we can improve on it. If we do that our response to disaster will improve. The essence of such responses as we all know is to save lives and properties of the people.”
