Niger Govt releases N25m to fight cholera outbreak, others

Worried by the outbreak of cholera, the Niger State government has approved the release of N25 million to fight the menace that has affected 120 persons in four Local Government Areas of the state.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mustapha Mohammed Jibrin, made this known in a press briefing yesterday in the Ministry of Health in Minna.
Jibrin said the N25 million will help the ministry to purchase the required drugs for the outbreak and to continue with the surveillance to enable the team identify parts of the state affected.
The affected local government areas to includes, Gbako with 15 cases, Lavun with 21 cases, Katcha with 10 cases and Bida had 74 cases according to the commissioner.
He also said that a total of 205 cases of gastroenteritis were reported in Agaie, Gurara, Lapai, Mokwa, Munya, Paikoro, Suleja, Tafa and Wushishi Local Government Areas of the state.
“Niger state government has sent a rapid response clinical team to assist in the management of the outbreak. The state also dispatched outbreak team to the affected councils for assessment and active case search. “ he stated.
According to him, “The state is collaborating closely with World Health Organisation WHO and United Nations International Children Education Fund to see that the menace stop. Samples are also being taken to confirm the causative organism,”
The Commissioner hinted that so far twenty states in the country and Federal Capital Territory FCT, have reported cholera outbreak this year with more than 6,850 cases and 97 deaths including Niger state.
He then advised the people to always observe good personal hygiene and environmental hygiene which will serve as prevention and control of the cholera outbreak in the state.
