The Made in China Goods Traders Association of Nigeria (MICGTAN) has commended the Chinese government for introducing a zero-tariff policy for African exports and for supporting free cataract surgery services in Nigeria, describing both initiatives as significant steps toward strengthening economic cooperation and improving healthcare outcomes across the continent.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, the association’s Patron and National President, Adigun Oluwole Samuel, said the tariff-free trade arrangement would provide African exporters, including Nigerian businesses, with greater access to the Chinese market and create new opportunities for investment, industrial growth and job creation.
According to him, the association, which facilitates trade relations between Nigeria and China through imports, exports and technology transfer, views the policy as a strategic intervention capable of boosting economic development, reducing poverty and expanding market opportunities for African businesses.
Samuel noted that China began implementing the policy on May 1, 2026, granting duty-free access to products from 53 African countries, including Nigeria, into the Chinese market. The arrangement is expected to remain in effect until April 2028 while discussions continue on a longer-term framework.
He said the initiative would enhance the competitiveness of African products by removing import duties on selected exports, encourage industrialisation through increased investment in local manufacturing and technology transfer, and strengthen economic ties between China and African nations.
The association also praised the Chinese Consulate General in Lagos for partnering with the Chinese community in Nigeria to provide free cataract surgeries aimed at reducing preventable blindness among Nigerians.
Samuel disclosed that the programme, coordinated by the Consulate General under the leadership of Yan Yuqing, is being implemented through designated hospitals in Lagos to provide treatment and surgical interventions for cataract patients and individuals with other eye-related conditions.
He urged members of the association and Nigerian entrepreneurs to take advantage of the tariff-free trade framework by expanding business relationships with Chinese companies, exploring new export markets and investing in value-added production. He added that such opportunities align with the Federal Government’s drive to attract investment and create jobs.
Highlighting the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and China, Samuel said bilateral trade between the two countries has grown substantially over the past five decades, with trade volumes exceeding $60 billion and expected to rise further before 2030.
He called on Nigerian and African traders to deepen engagement with Chinese manufacturers and investors, stressing that stronger commercial partnerships would contribute to economic growth and sustainable development across the continent.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting mutually beneficial trade relations between Nigeria and China while encouraging members to leverage emerging opportunities under the new policy.
