NLO Slams Green Beret FC With Two-Year Ban, N1.5m Fine
The Nationwide League One (NLO) has slammed a two year ban on Green Beret Football Club following violence that marred its match against Zamfara United FC.
In a statement, the NLO expressed deep concern over the assault on match officials after the game, describing the incident as a serious threat to the integrity and safety of football in Nigeria.
According to the league body, the situation became particularly alarming when one of the referees was reportedly left lying in a pool of blood after the attack.
The NLO condemned the violence in the strongest terms, noting that such behavior has no place in football and damages the image of the sport.
The league body said this was not the first time Green Beret FC had been linked to violent conduct, recalling a similar incident the previous season.
As a result, the NLO said it was compelled to impose strict sanctions to serve as deterrent to protect match officials, players, and supporters.
It said that following review of the incident, the match result, initially won 2-0 by Zamfara United FC, has been adjusted and recorded as a 3-0 victory in favour of Zamfara United.
In addition, Green Beret FC has been fined ₦1 million for violent conduct, with payment required within seven days.
The club was further directed to pay ₦500,000 compensation to the injured referees within seven days.
The club has also been ordered to identify and produce the individual alleged to have stabbed the referee within 48 hours.
The NLO stressed that football must remain a safe environment for everyone involved and warned that acts of violence against match officials would continue to attract severe sanctions.
The league body called on clubs, players, officials, and supporters to embrace sportsmanship and respect for the rules of the game, emphasizing that discipline and fair play are essential to the growth and development of Nigerian football.
