NNPP elects Bala Mohammed as National Chairman
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced the election of Bala Yunusa Mohammed as the party’s new National Chairman, signalling a leadership shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bamofin Johnson, the NNPP described Mohammed as an experienced administrator with deep knowledge of the party’s structure, having previously served as National Organising Secretary.
According to the statement, the Kaduna State-born politician brings a wealth of experience, tactical brilliance, and an unwavering commitment to the party’s grassroots ideology to his new role.
The party also confirmed the resignation of its former chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, who has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The NNPP leadership expressed appreciation for Ahmed’s contributions during his tenure and wished him well in his future political pursuits.
The announcement comes amid what the party described as a critical juncture in Nigeria’s political and economic landscape.
The NNPP raised concerns over worsening economic hardship, rising inflation, and growing insecurity across the country.
Beyond economic issues, the party alleged increasing threats to Nigeria’s democracy as the 2027 elections approach.
It cited what it termed “sponsored internal crises” within opposition parties, spurious legal challenges, and a broader erosion of democratic values aimed at weakening credible alternatives.
“Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a sanctuary for the hopes of the common man,” the statement read, expressing confidence in Mohammed’s ability to lead the party through the challenges ahead.
The NNPP said the emergence of its new chairman reflects a unified resolve to strengthen the party and position it as a viable alternative in the next general elections.
It called on members and supporters nationwide to rally behind the new leadership, emphasising that preparations for 2027 would require unity, resilience, and strategic coordination.
“The journey to 2027 is a marathon,” the party stated, adding that it is now better positioned to present what it described as people-oriented governance to Nigerians
