The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Grace Ike, has called on journalists in the nation’s capital to recommit themselves to ethical journalism, unity, and professionalism as they enter the 2026 work year.
In a New Year message addressed to members of the NUJ FCT Council, Ike commended journalists for their resilience and dedication in the past year, noting that despite numerous challenges, members remained steadfast in upholding the ideals of the profession.
She described journalism as the conscience of society, stressing that the role of the media in shaping public narratives, strengthening democracy, and promoting national cohesion has become increasingly critical in the face of evolving social and political realities.
According to her, the new year presents an opportunity for journalists to reset and refocus, adding that the NUJ FCT Council would intensify efforts aimed at improving members’ welfare, professional development, and unity.
Ike assured members that the Council would continue to advocate for better working conditions, capacity-building programmes, and institutional support to enable journalists adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing media landscape.
She also emphasised the importance of ethical journalism, urging members to uphold accuracy, fairness, balance, and integrity, particularly at a time when misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust in the media.
The NUJ FCT chairperson further called for solidarity among journalists, noting that unity and mutual respect remain key to building a strong and responsive Council that protects and supports its members.
She encouraged journalists to approach 2026 with optimism and a renewed sense of responsibility, while embracing innovation without compromising professional values.
On behalf of the NUJ FCT Council leadership, Ike wished members and their families a peaceful, prosperous, and fulfilling New Year, expressing hope that 2026 would bring good health, professional fulfilment, and collective success to all.
