Former Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, are set to receive special democracy honours at the forthcoming Democracy Day Conference 2026 organised by Nigeria Youths in Politics.

The group disclosed this during a press conference held ahead of the conference themed, “Now Is The Time: Youths Building a Sustainable Democracy.”

President of Nigeria Youths in Politics, Hon. Blessing Oyefeso, said the event was aimed at promoting youth participation in governance and deepening democratic values as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

According to him, Obasanjo, who will serve as the Father of the Occasion, will be decorated with the title, “Custodian of Democracy and Inter-Generational Leadership.”

Jonathan, who is expected to chair the occasion, will also receive the award of “Guardian of Peace and Selfless Leadership Icon.”

Oyefeso said the conference would bring together political leaders, policymakers, youth groups, students and professionals to deliberate on the future of democracy and youth inclusion in governance.

He noted that the conference would also witness the inauguration of the Nigeria Youths in Politics National Working Committee, saddled with the responsibility of promoting youth electoral participation and monitoring electoral processes ahead of 2027.

The youth leader said the initiative became necessary in view of growing concerns over voter apathy, political violence and declining trust in democratic institutions among young Nigerians.

He added that the conference would honour notable Nigerians who had contributed to leadership, nation-building and youth empowerment.

Among those expected to be honoured are Barrister Seyi Tinubu, Prof. Patrick Lumumba, Prof. Jerry Gana, Prince Arthur Eze and Engr. Mathew Tonlagha.

Oyefeso stressed that recognising leaders with positive contributions to national development would inspire younger generations to embrace integrity, patriotism and selfless service.

He also called on government institutions, civil society organisations, development partners and the media to support efforts geared towards building an inclusive and sustainable democracy in the country.
