….As meeting convened by Dep Senate President deadlocked
By Lateef Ibrahim, Abuja
Almost a month after the governorship election in the country, facts have emerged as to the real reasons why the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State lost the election to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was the APC gubernatorial candidate in the election.
Omo-Agege was defeated by the candidate of the PDP, Mr Sheriff Ovoribhori.
Similarly, the factional meeting of the Delta APC called by the Deputy Senate President in Asaba, the state capital has ended in a deadlock.
The State Secretary of APC in Delta, Mr Inana Michael told journalists yesterday in a telephone interview that Senator Omo-Agege excluded all the leaders of the party, who are capable of delivering their local governments and wards from his governorship campaign, while it lasted.
According to Mr Michael, ” Our governorship candidate, Senator Omo-Agege excluded the party’s leaders, who are capable of delivering their local governments and wards to the party.
“This is a big factor that worked against Omo-Agege and the party.
“He felt he can use small boys, his aides to win election, but the election did not go that way.
“Election needs people, who are well known that can stand”, he explained.
Continuing, the Delta APC Secretary said, “Also, unfortunately for him (the governorship candidate), he could not control the crowd he invited.
“He could not carry the people along and he could not meet their expectations. What he has been telling them is that he has already taken care of everything.
“He told them to just play cool and thst the result will be announced. But unfortunately, when the people went to the poll, what they met was different from what he has been telling them”, he stated.
Meanwhile, the Delta State chapter of the APC) has derided the party governorship candidate, Senator Omo-Agege over his meeting with a faction of APC members in the state that ended in deadlock.
The meeting, which was held on Tuesday in Delta state, ended in deadlock, because, according to some members of the faction, Omo-Agege contributed to why APC lost in Delta state.
A chieftain of the party, who spoke on the condition of anonymity after the meeting, said that Omo-Agege had been accused of improper planning, exclusion of capable leaders amongst others, adding that this development led to the party’s failure in the just concluded governorship election in the State.
The APC chieftain also pointed out that during the governorship election, Omo-Agege was the only one running the show, which led to division in the party and by extension reduced supporters of the party.
“At the end of the day, he said he would call a meeting of thirty men, to go from ward to ward to tell the people that they should not leave the party that he is sure of victory and that he will reclaim his mandate at the end of the day from the court”, the APC leader said.
