The Oyo State House of Assembly yesterday impeached the Deputy Governor of the State, Engineer Rauf Aderemi Olaniyan, just as it confirmed also yesterday the nomination of Bayo Lawal as new Deputy Governor by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Olaniyan was impeached by members of the state House of Assembly on Monday.

The deputy governor was impeached around 11:30 am by the lawmakers.

The House of Assembly is dominated by members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The lawmakers during the plenary on Monday announced that they impeached the Deputy Governor following the recommendation of the panel set up to investigate him.

The announcement of the impeachment was made on Monday following the adoption of the recommendations of the report of the seven-man panel set up to investigate allegations levelled against him.

The panel report was read by the Majority Leader of the House, Sanjo Adedoyin from Ogbomoso and adopted by the State lawmakers.

In a related development, the State lawmakers also yesterday approved the nomination of Barrister Bayo Lawal as the new Deputy Governor of the state.

The approval came a few hours after the Assembly removed Rauf Olaniyan.

The House has on Monday removed Olaniyan, a native of Igboho from office, following the recommendation of the panel of inquiry set up to investigate him.

The name of the new Deputy Governor was sent to the House by Governor Seyi Makinde.

The lawmakers approved the nomination of Lawal during their plenary in Ibadan.

The majority leader, Sanjo Adedoyin said that the nomination was in order.

Kazeem Olayanju, who also spoke, supported the nomination.

Our correspondent reports that the state secretariat which houses the House of Assembly has been under heavy security presence.
