Early morning risers in the Apapa area of Lagos struggled to jump out of their moving buses in fright, while passers-by took to their heels, when a tanker that has just been loaded with AGO (diesel) at the Total Depot in Apapa suddenly went up in flames.
According to NEMA spokesperson for South-West zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, the incident happened at about 5.30 a.m. in the premises of St. Theresa Primary School, where the driver had parked the vehicle, in order to obtain the necessary documents that will enable him transport the product to its destination from the officials of the depot.
He further revealed that it was when the driver returned to continue his journey that, as he made to drive out of the school premises there was a deafening explosion that was simultaneously followed by fire, which sent dark clouds into the sky.
However, the prompt response of firemen from both the State and Federal unit according to Ibrahim prevented the fire from spreading to the depot the tanker had just left.
He maintained that no life was lost in the incident.
