The Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), has moved to close ranks ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Adamawa State by affirming Chief Maurice Vunobolki as its governorship candidate through a consensus process.
Vunobolki emerged as the party’s flag bearer after delegates from the 21 local government areas of the state endorsed him during an affirmation exercise held at Mahmud Ribadu Square in Yola.
The exercise highlighted the PDP’s attempt to maintain internal cohesion in Adamawa despite lingering factional issues within the party.
Although another aspirant, Caleb Andrew Myebangara, was reported to have shown interest in the ticket, he was absent from the exercise, reportedly because he belongs to a faction not recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).
The motion for Vunobolki’s endorsement was moved by former House of Representatives member, Ja’afaru Ribadu, and seconded by Ibrahim Jimeta, chairman of Yola North Local Government, before delegates approved the candidature through a voice vote.
Chairman of the PDP Governorship Primary Committee for Adamawa State, Debo Ologunagba, subsequently declared Vunobolki as the party’s duly nominated governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
In his acceptance speech, Vunobolki appealed for unity within the PDP and urged party members to support his ambition to reclaim power for the party in the state.
He said his background in development consulting had exposed him to the challenges facing communities across Adamawa State and positioned him to offer practical solutions if elected governor.
The PDP candidate also challenged aspirants from rival political parties to public debates where they would present their understanding of the state’s challenges and explain their plans to voters ahead of the election.
