Police adopt community based policing, says AIG

Date:

The Zone 10 Police Command, Sokoto, yesterday, said it had adopted a community-based policing to ensure full participation of all citizens in the fight against terrorism.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in-charge of the zone, Alhaji Bala Hassan, announced this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto.

Hassan said the approach would enable the police and the rural communities to share intelligence on movement of suspicious characters within their localities.

“Already, the police had sought the support of the Sultanate Council of Sokoto in sensitising the people to the need to take active participation in the community policing,’’ he said.

The AIG explained that the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) would be strengthened to allow the full participation of rural community leaders.

Hassan said the three commissioners of police in the zone had been briefed on how to fully mobilise the communities in offering vital information on suspected visitors.

“Police cannot be everywhere all the times but the members of the communities are there always. Hence the need for us to make them to be security conscious in complementing our efforts in tackling the security challenges,’’ the AIG said.

He explained that Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers had been directed to work hand in hand with traditional rulers.

Hassan, however, assured members of the public that the police would continue to be friendly to the citizens in carrying out their constitutional duties.

He called on officers and men in the zone to continue to put in their best in crime prevention and control. (NAN)
