Police arrest 20-year-old over alleged culpable homicide in Jigawa
The Jigawa State Police Command has recorded significant breakthroughs in its sustained efforts to maintain law and order across the state, with the arrest of suspects linked to separate incidents of culpable homicide, attack on a police facility, arson, and violent disturbances in Gujungu Market, Taura Local Government Area.
In one of the incidents on Monday, 3rd July 2026, a misunderstanding between two young men in Dabigel Village, Ringim Local Government Area, led to the death of one of them.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that a misunderstanding between two 20-year-old youths degenerated into violence, during which one of them allegedly stabbed the other with a sharp metal object on his chest.
“The victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment.”
The police said one Saminu Ibrahim, 20, of Gidan Gona village was arrested in connection with the incident.
“Upon completion of investigation, the suspect will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction to face the full weight of the law,” the command spokesman, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam said in a statement on Monday.
In another development, on 26th July, 2026, the Command said it has arrested two suspects in connection with the violent unrest that erupted at Gujungu Market.
The disturbance reportedly began following a misunderstanding between a soldier and one Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim of Miga LGA at the market.
During the altercation, the soldier allegedly stabbed Biniya with a knife, resulting in injuries from which the victim was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
Following the incident, some hoodlums took advantage of the situation to attack a police station, discharged bows and arrows at security personnel, and set two tatch shops ablaze within the market.
However, sustained intelligence-led operations facilitated the arrest of two suspects believed to have actively participated in the attack, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices.
The suspects are Muhammed Muhammed, 22, of Gagarawa LGA, and Faridu Mohammed.
“In a related incident arising from the same disturbance, on 2nd August 2026, six suspects were arrested for allegedly attacking two vigilante members with sticks and cutlasses.
“As a result of the assault, one vigilante member sustained fatal injuries and was certified dead by a medical doctor, while the second victim is currently responding to treatment at a medical facility,” the statement added.
The Command said it also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the unrest.
“Investigation into the matter is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and bring all those involved to justice.
“The suspects identified as Isiyaku Abdulkarim aged 55, Yahaya Habu, 31, Ibrahim Abubakar, 30, Audu Mamman Janare, 30, Ya’u Duga, 65, and Mamman Musa, 20, all of Taura, Gagarawa, Kaugama, and Jahun LGAs.”
Meanwhile, the Police Command is holding a stakeholder engagement involving miyetti Allah, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, youth representatives, and other relevant stakeholders to address the root causes of the Gujungu Market incident, strengthen community cooperation, and prevent a recurrence of the incident.
