Project BALE Promotes Inclusion, Creativity At Schools, IDP Camp

Young people at Fountain School and the Yimitu Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp Abuja have benefited from a series of activities promoting inclusion, creativity and environmental responsibility under Project BALE – Inclusion for All.

The activities, implemented by the YieldUp Development Initiative on July 9 and 11, 2026, is aimed at equipping young people with knowledge and skills while encouraging them to recognise their potential and contribute to their communities.

The July 11 outreach at Yimitu IDP Camp featured a hands-on environmental education and creativity session, during which participants learned to transform discarded materials into useful and innovative products. Using plastic bottles, cartons and other waste materials, the participants created items such as fascinators, vases and bow ties, demonstrating how materials often regarded as waste can be repurposed into useful and potentially marketable products.

The session also exposed participants to the importance of environmental responsibility, sustainability and resourcefulness, while encouraging creativity and innovation. The activity reflected the broader goal of Project BALE – Inclusion for All, which seeks to create opportunities for young people, irrespective of disability or social disadvantage, to discover their abilities, develop valuable skills and explore new possibilities.

Two days earlier, on July 9, the initiative visited Fountain School for an interactive session on disability and inclusion using “Awakening Possibilities in Disabilities Book”.

The pupils participated in a pre-assessment and practical discussions on disability, inclusion and the Accessibility Triangle, aimed at challenging misconceptions and promoting understanding, empathy and respect for human diversity. Exercise books and writing materials were also provided to support the pupils’ learning.

The two engagements highlighted different dimensions of inclusion from helping children understand that disability is part of human diversity to creating practical opportunities for young people to develop creativity, skills and confidence.

Project BALE – Inclusion for All is implemented by the YieldUp Development Initiative and funded by the European Union (EU) and Global Youth Mobilization (GYM) through the Youth Empowerment Fund.

The organizers said the support is helping to create opportunities for young people to learn, develop their potential and become active contributors to more inclusive and sustainable communities. The outreach activities reinforced the message that every young person deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and realise their potential, while every step towards inclusion and sustainability contributes to stronger communities.
