The Chairman, Senate Committee on land Transport, Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura, has informed that the rehabilitation project on railway lines, comprised of western and eastern corridors across the nation, were almost completed as, according to him, trains have commenced operations across the major corridors to the northern part of the country.
Sahabi, who spoke to newsmen on the development in Gusau, Zamfara state capital, said both passengers and their wares from Lagos, through Kwara state to Kano terminus on the western railway corridor, have already started enjoying the services as planned by the federal government.
The Senator further disclosed that, another rehabilitation of a feeder railway line, which runs from Zaria to Kauran-Namoda axis, has reached 80 percent completion; the development that witnessed the movement of trains to Funtua and is eventually expected to reach Kauran-Namoda towards the end of the year.
He informed that a feasibility study has already been awarded for the total rehabilitation of the neglected rail line from Kauran-Namoda-Ilellah and terminated in Sokoto state, which is aimed at reviving the collapsed viable commercial activities along the axis, to ensure the nation’s economic upliftment.
Senator Sahabi challenged that the railway transportation would replace all other dangerous means of conveying goods and passengers across the country, for according to him, it is more safer and affordable to common man.
