…… Donates ₦2bn to Revive Weaving Industry
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has pledged to wear the traditional Akwete wrapper if President Bola Tinubu secures a second term in office, while announcing a ₦2 billion intervention to revive the renowned Akwete weaving industry in Abia State.
Speaking on Tuesday during her maiden visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village, the First Lady said she had developed a deep appreciation for the locally woven fabric and would proudly promote it if her husband is re-elected.
“If God brings my husband in a second time, I’ll be wearing a buba and wrapper made from Akwete. I am going to be wearing that because it is very soft, breathable cotton,” she said.
She praised the women of the cooperative for preserving the centuries-old weaving tradition and commended the transfer of the craft from one generation to another.
To support the industry’s growth, Tinubu announced a ₦2 billion donation aimed at revitalising the Akwete weaving sector and creating more economic opportunities for local artisans.
The First Lady also encouraged Nigerians to embrace locally made textiles, particularly Akwete fabric, describing patronage of indigenous products as a vital step toward preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage and improving the livelihoods of rural weavers.
Explaining the nature of her visit, Tinubu said she deliberately came without a prepared speech because she wanted a personal interaction with the women rather than a formal ceremony.
She also commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti, describing him as “a very good man,” and recalled previously reaching out to his wife to learn more about the Akwete weaving tradition.
According to her, she had long desired to visit the community and was grateful that the trip finally became a reality.
Tinubu reiterated her call for greater support for locally produced fabrics, stressing that promoting indigenous craftsmanship would strengthen local industries, preserve cultural identity and boost economic development.
