The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council on Thursday rolled out celebrations as dignitaries including the House of Representatives Spokesperson, Hon. Akin Rotimi Jr., and Managing Director of Arise News, Mr. Bayo Awoseme, joined the union to mark Comrade Grace Ike’s one year in office—an era hailed as transformative and historic.
The event doubled as the groundbreaking ceremony for the long-awaited remodelling of the NUJ Secretariat in Abuja, setting a new pace for infrastructure renewal within the council.
In her address, Ike reflected on her historic election as the first female chairman in 41 years—a moment she described as a defining turning point that “ignited a new dawn” for the council.
She noted that the achievements celebrated over the year represent “a council that chose transformation over tradition, unity over division, and progress over stagnation.”
Ike outlined her administration’s focus on rebuilding trust, revitalising morale, and repositioning the NUJ FCT as “a powerful house of journalism.”
She highlighted the revival of fellowship among members through Christmas, Ramadan Iftar, Salah and Easter gatherings, which she said proved that “unity is not a slogan but a lifestyle.”
On capacity building, the chairman cited training programmes, establishment of press clubs in schools and empowerment of information officers as investments that “reinforced the backbone of professionalism.”
She affirmed that welfare had remained central to her leadership—through medical outreaches and responsive support—because “a journalist’s life is as important as the story they tell.”
Ike also celebrated the return of sporting events such as football and table tennis, which she said strengthened camaraderie beyond newsroom walls.
She described the secretariat remodelling as a decisive step towards creating a conducive work environment worthy of media professionals.
“Our first year was rebuilding; the next will be elevation,” she told members, assuring that the council would continue to thrive in welfare, professionalism and unity.
In his goodwill message, House Spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi Jr. praised Ike as “our ambassador,” recalling her notable impact on the 10th Assembly’s Legislative Agenda during her time as Chair of the House Press Corps.
He affirmed the National Assembly’s ongoing support for journalists, describing the media as indispensable to legislative effectiveness and public trust.
Rotimi acknowledged the pressures journalists face—from accuracy demands to deadline race—yet carry the weight of nation-building.
He applauded the council’s building project as the kind of bold vision “that must be so big it can only be achieved by the grace of God,” pledging personal support and calling on House leadership to contribute.
He commended Ike for proving that women excel in leadership, predicting she would be called to higher national service.
Similarly, Director of Public Buildings at the FCDA, Arc. Bature T. Garba, stressed NUJ’s strategic importance in Abuja’s development.
He recalled government support for the NUJ Secretariat in Utako and reaffirmed FCDA’s commitment to provide technical expertise to ensure media facilities meet global standards.
Garba emphasised that Abuja’s progress depends on “accurate information, responsible reportage and meaningful public enlightenment,” adding that collaboration between the media and city developers is crucial as the capital evolves.
Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, Hon. Bamidele Salam, also congratulated Ike, describing her leadership as “exemplary, transformative and anchored on capacity, integrity and passion.”
He called the groundbreaking a major milestone and encouraged the council to remain focused on teamwork, inclusiveness and excellence.
Salam assured continued institutional and personal support, expressing optimism that the council’s accomplishments would pave the way for greater national roles for its leadership.
In his remarks, Garba reiterated that Abuja’s growth has historically depended on strong partnerships, with the media playing a central role.
He commended the synergy between journalists and development institutions, stressing that as the FCT undergoes infrastructure renewal under Minister Nyesom Wike, responsible media engagement remains key to public enlightenment.
He reaffirmed FCDA’s commitment to guiding the NUJ’s secretariat upgrade, insisting that safety, functionality and architectural excellence are central to public building standards.
“As Abuja grows into a more resilient and globally competitive capital city, partnership between city developers and the media is even more crucial,” he said.
He congratulated the NUJ leadership, urging them to continue projecting a united voice for public good.
“Together, with collaboration and one vision, we can build a better Abuja for today and future generations,” Garba affirmed.
