Senate Minority Leader Sen. George Akume has stressed the need for peaceful co-existence amongst the people even in the face of the crisis between the Tiv farmers and Fulani herdsmen in his home state, Benue.
Sen. Akume who said this at the weekend while presenting relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs at Asunkunya, Tarka local government of Benue state, noted that there is no alternative to peace as crisis causes great drawback to any society.
“We are known to be war-like and very courageous. The time for war is over. We should seek peaceful co-existence”, Akume said.
Though he frowned at the high level of destruction caused by the crisis, he urged the people to remain calm as efforts are been made at different levels to end the feud.
The Senate leader also passionately appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of the refugees by donating relief materials to them.
“I want to passionately appeal to men and women of goodwill to extend this kind of gesture to these unfortunate citizens of this country, he appealed.
The relief materials include hundred bags of beans, rice cassava flour, mats and other food items Sen. Akume had last week donated relief materials to refugees at Daudu, Guma local,government area.
