Senator Rufai Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District and serves as the Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, has resigned from the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), ending his membership of the opposition party.
Hanga announced his decision in a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026, and addressed to the NDC Ward Chairman in Dakata Ward.
The lawmaker said his resignation followed “careful reflection and personal deliberation,” explaining that he was leaving the party to pursue personal commitments and a different career path.
He thanked the ward leadership, executive committee and party members for their support throughout his time in the NDC, describing the relationships and experiences gained during his political activities in the party as valuable.
As part of the resignation process, Hanga returned his NDC membership card and requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register at the ward level.
“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective today, August 3, 2026,” the letter stated.
The senator concluded by wishing the party and its members success in their future political activities.
Hanga did not disclose his next political destination or whether he intends to join another political party.
