Senate yesterday rejected the recommendation of its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions for the withdrawal of the senate accreditation of THISDAY and Punch newspapers, over a negative report regarding the Majority Leader of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan.
The two newspapers had in May 2017 reported that Lawan was booed by youths in his constituency, a report which he denied.
His denial at plenary was reported by THISDAY on May 25, 2017. The matter was however referred to the Ethic committee.
Presenting the report of the committee, the Chairman, Senator Sam Anyanwu demanded a retraction of the story by the newspapers, with apology to the Senate Leader.
The recommendation was approved by the lawmakers.
The second recommendation for the blacklist of the media outfits from covering the Senate was rejected as the majority of the lawmaker voted against it.
