Nine senators on Thursday defected from their political parties to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the letters of defection during plenary.

The Senators are from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP),  and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The Senators are Aminu Tambuwal, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Ireti Kingibe, Lawal Adamu Usman, Ogoshi Onawo, Austin Akobundu, Tony Nwoye and Binos Yaroe.

The defection has made the ADC the biggest opposition party in the Senate which is dominated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) which has 85 senators. The remaining senators 8 from PDP; New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) — 1; National Democratic Coalition (NDC) — 1; APGA — 1; and Social Democratic Party (SDP) — 1.

Three seats remain vacant following the deaths of Barinada Mpigi, senator representing Rivers south-east; Godiya Akwashiki, senator representing Nasarawa north; and Okey Ezea, senator representing Enugu north.
