Temporary voter cards will aid rigging – APC

Date:

Permanent Voter Card (PVC)By Ali Abare Abubakar

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has decried calls for the use of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) temporary voter cards in the scheduled general election.

The APC through its national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said there is no going back on the use of the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as according to him, that is the only way to check rigging.

Mohammed said this while delivering a speech yesterday at a two-day conference on Nigeria 2015 elections and beyond, organized by the Savannah Centre and the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

He said it is unacceptable to the APC for INEC to revert to the use of the temporary voter cards in the coming election, stressing that the action will open another gate for election rigging.

“Card readers must be used against allegations of buying and selling of voter cards” he said.

On the fate of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the three most affected states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, the APC national publicity secretary, said INEC must ensure that election takes place there.

Lai Mohammed however lamented that as long as agencies of government, particularly security agencies fail to observe strict neutrality, there is the tendency for elections to be marred.
