The Anglican Diocese of Kaduna has called on Nigerians to place their trust in God rather than in political leaders and institutions, while expressing deep concerns over governance, electoral integrity, rising public debt, and the growing population of street children across the country.
Delivering his presidential address at the Synod Thanksgiving Service held at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church, Kakuri, Kaduna South Local Government Area, the Archbishop of the Kaduna Ecclesiastical Province and Bishop of Kaduna Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Most Rev. Dr. Timothy Yahaya, said the theme of this year’s Synod, “Blessed is the Person that Trusts in God,” was a timely reminder for Nigerians amid mounting national challenges.
According to the Archbishop, years of dependence on human leadership and institutions have yielded disappointment, making it imperative for citizens to place their confidence in God.
“We have relied on men as leaders, but they have failed us. We depend on them for security, yet the nation remains insecure. We value certificates, yet graduates roam the streets without jobs,” he said.
He lamented the persistent decline in critical sectors, noting that despite concerns raised decades ago about the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system, little improvement has been recorded.
While urging Nigerians not to lose hope, Yahaya stressed that God remains the only dependable source of help and restoration.
The Synod also took a swipe at the National Assembly, accusing lawmakers of failing to effectively scrutinize the activities of the Executive arm of government.
“The National Assembly has become an appendage of the Executive. Loans worth billions of dollars are approved with little or no rigorous scrutiny,” the Archbishop stated.
He argued that the legislature has abandoned its constitutional oversight responsibilities, thereby weakening the principle of separation of powers essential to democratic governance.
On electoral matters, Yahaya expressed the Synod’s lack of confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging the commission to restore public trust ahead of future elections.
Addressing INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Archbishop said Nigerians remain skeptical about the credibility of the electoral process following the controversies that trailed the 2023 general elections.
He warned against any attempt to disenfranchise voters, particularly amid reports of challenges affecting the continuous voter registration exercise.
“INEC must prove itself this time.
Nigerians deserve free, fair and credible elections, not what many have described as a kangaroo process,” he said.
The cleric also questioned the value derived from the huge resources allocated to the electoral body, recalling that technical glitches cited during the 2023 elections were never adequately explained.
The Synod further described the increasing number of out-of-school and street children as a major threat to Nigeria’s future.
According to Yahaya, children who grow up without access to education, family support and social protection are likely to become alienated from society, creating long-term security and social challenges.
“The greatest investment any nation can make is in its people, not in its mineral resources. Governments at all levels must urgently address the plight of street and out-of-school children,” he said.
The Archbishop also questioned the rationale behind the Federal Government’s continued borrowing despite the removal of fuel subsidies, noting that many Nigerians have yet to see tangible benefits from the loans being secured.
He proposed that proceeds from subsidy removal should be strategically managed, with portions dedicated to debt repayment, economic stabilization and government operations.
Drawing comparisons with Nigeria’s First Republic, Yahaya said loans obtained in earlier years funded visible infrastructure projects such as the Kainji Dam, unlike the present situation where citizens struggle to identify projects linked to borrowed funds.
He also criticized what he described as early political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections, lamenting the deployment of large numbers of vehicles for partisan activities while critical sectors such as healthcare remain underfunded.
Calling for selfless leadership, the Archbishop urged political office holders to prioritize national development above personal interests.
“We must ask ourselves whether Nigeria is a country worth sacrificing for. Our leaders must put aside selfish ambitions and work for the common good,” he said.
In an emotional conclusion, Yahaya challenged the Federal Government to demonstrate greater compassion and urgency in addressing insecurity and humanitarian crises affecting vulnerable citizens.
He expressed concern over reports of children dying in conflict-affected areas while political leaders continue public engagements without sufficient attention to the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
The Synod concluded by urging leaders at all levels to govern with accountability, compassion and a renewed commitment to the welfare of the people.
