Habibat Kikelomo Tunwase, a recent Accounting graduate from the University of Abuja (now Yakubu Gowon University), has appealed to the Federal Government to address the rising tide of unemployment by providing job opportunities for Nigerian graduates.
Speaking with newsmen during the university’s convocation ceremony, Tunwase highlighted the plight of many graduates currently roaming the streets in search of livelihoods.
She further charged government at all levels to integrate graduates into comprehensive skills acquisition programs, regardless of their academic qualifications.
According to her, such initiatives are essential for fostering self-reliance and reducing dependency within society.
While urging current students to remain committed to their academic pursuits, Tunwase expressed profound gratitude to her father for his unwavering support throughout her degree program.
Also speaking at the event, her father, Chief Dr. Wasiu Tunwase—the Otunba of the Yoruba community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) reaffirmed his commitment to her education, stating his intention to sponsor her for a Master’s degree.
Chief Tunwase joined his daughter in pleading with the government to expand the labour market to accommodate the growing number of university products.
He also commended the university management for ensuring a secure environment during the convocation proceedings.
In their separate remarks, the graduand’s stepfather, Mr. Ibrahim Babalola Tunwase, and her mother, Mrs. Yetunde Tunwase, advised her to remain focused and disciplined as she navigates the next phase of her life to achieve her long-term ambitions.
