Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have rescued 10 students and teachers abducted by suspected ISWAP terrorists at Government Technical School, Lassa in Borno State.
The victims were kidnapped on Monday morning while writing their NECO examinations.
According to the military, troops, supported by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, launched an immediate search-and-rescue operation after receiving reports of the attack.
“Strike aircraft and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms were deployed to support ground forces.
“The rescue operation led troops to the Daggu area, where they engaged the fleeing terrorists in a fierce gun battle.
“Following the encounter, 10 abducted victims were rescued unharmed and are currently receiving appropriate care, while efforts continue to locate and rescue the remaining victim,” the OPHK said.
The military further said several terrorists were neutralised during the exchange of fire, while seven motorcycles used by the insurgents were recovered, disrupting their escape.
However, the operation recorded casualties on the side of the security forces, with one soldier and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) losing their lives during the confrontation.
Operation HADIN KAI described the fallen personnel as gallant heroes whose sacrifice reflected the dedication of security forces and local volunteers working to restore peace in the North-East.
The military said troops, in collaboration with other security agencies, have intensified operations across the area to track down those responsible for the attack, while additional security measures have been put in place to protect vulnerable communities and educational institutions.
According to the statement, the attack highlights the desperation of terrorist groups, who have increasingly targeted soft targets following sustained military pressure on their strongholds.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians, securing schools and critical infrastructure, and dismantling terrorist networks across the North-East.
The military also urged members of the public to remain vigilant, provide credible intelligence to security agencies, and disregard unverified reports regarding the incident in a statement was signed by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Maiduguri.
