A University lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Abuja, Prof. Clement Didi Chup, has urged the Federal Government to deem it necessary to enlighten Nigerians on the hazard of environmental degradation.
Chup said this while presenting the 33rd inaugural lecture of the University entitled “The Environment: Man’s Common Heritage or a paradox” at the permanent site of the institution on Thursday, disclosing that the existing laws as well as policies on the environment should be enforced.
His words: “In Nigeria for instance there is the need for the environmental policy to include massive awareness which should be targeted at policy makers and implementers, students as well as the general public. This awareness campaign will inculcate environmental ethics into all strata of the country’s population and will also have long term impacts towards ensuring the sustainability of our environment”.
He further added: “Policy makers and implementers should be engaged in form of symposia and seminars, while students should be compulsorily taught basic principles of the environment”.
He charged the government of the day to revive the Green Wall Sahara project which was conceived as well introduced about 13 years ago, noting that the project was targeted at revolutionizing agriculture in the nation, especially the northern Nigeria.
On the rainwater, the Professor appealed to Nigerians to engage in rainwater harvesting, so as to put an end to seasonal scarcity of water that being witnessed in some parts of Nigeria.
Chup, who is a Professor of Environmental Resources Management, however, called for a population control policy for the betterment of Nigerians.
