Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State, Dr. Micheal Tidi has said that early proactive measures were necessary in stopping the spread of the recent outbreak of the Avian Influenza (Bird flu) in poultry farms across the state.
Dr Tidi said this during the sensitisation awareness creation and enlightenment forum on the scourge, held at the council secretariat in Warri.
The Area Veterinary Officer in Warri South and Warri South-West council areas in the state, Dr. Uguru, had reported that there had been reports of confirmed outbreaks of Avian Influenza with devastating effects in certain poultry farms in the Delta Central Senatorial District of the state, adding that the outbreak had caused economic losses with far reaching impacts, such as unemployment and possible threat to food safety in the state.
He went further to say that Avian Influenza could be prevented and controlled through adequate implementation of vital guidelines on simple hygienic principles and farm practices designed to reduce the chances of diseases getting into into the farms.
He commended the efforts of the Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa) for the continuous provision of necessary inputs for the containment and control of the disease and other livestock diseases in Delta State.
