Wike and President Tinubu

By Stanley Onyekwere

In a stirring address that bridged the gap between political theory and practical governance, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as a masterclass in “servant-oriented leadership.”
Speaking at the 2026 Annual Distinguished Personality Lecture Series at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, Wike argued that the President’s bold reforms are not just policy shifts, but the essential foundation for Nigeria’s long-term survival and prosperity.
Addressing the theme, “Exemplary Leadership and Infrastructural Development in Nigeria,” Wike highlighted the removal of the fuel subsidy as a defining moment in Nigerian history.
He characterized the move as an act of “uncommon resolve” against an economically destructive practise that previous administrations lacked the political will to touch.
“This decision exemplifies leadership willing to endure temporary unpopularity in pursuit of long-term national interest,” Wike stated.
While acknowledging the short-term pains felt by citizens, the Minister emphasised that the reform has freed resources for subnational development; halted the spiral of unsustainable national debt; restored market discipline to the energy sector.
Wike reminded the audience that the President’s capacity for transformation was proven long ago in Lagos State, where he turned vision into reality through institutional reforms and massive infrastructure growth.
He further noted that the current administration is actively tackling structural imbalances by devolving power through regional commissions and strengthening the armed forces to restore public confidence in state security.
However, the Minister issued a firm reminder: Government cannot do it alone.
Wike called on Nigerians to abandon “cynicism and disengagement,” stressing that national transformation requires a partnership between the governors and the governed.
“Progress is forged where leadership and followership work in synergy. The time for belief is now, and the time for action is now”, he stated
The event also served as a moment of recognition for Wike himself. The Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Aminu Gusau, lauded Wike’s tenure in the FCT, noting the visible restoration of the Abuja Master Plan and the completion of vital road networks.
“You may like his personality; you may not like his personality,” Gusau remarked, “but one thing is certain: he works, and he works for the people.”
The Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Prof. Hakeem Fawehonmi, and the Dean of Social Science, Prof. Mutiullah Olasupo, both emphasised that such lectures are vital for the university’s intellectual tradition.
They noted that the discussion serves as a critical guide for Nigerians as they look toward the 2027 elections and the deepening of democratic governance.
