As the world observes International Water Day, Kaduna State has highlighted notable progress in revitalizing its water sector under Governor Uba Sani’s administration.

The Honourable Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, in commemorating the 2026 International Water Day, stated that the reforms demonstrate the administration’s strong commitment to sustainable development and a better quality of life.

“Governor Uba Sani’ s intervention in the water sector is deliberate and far- reaching—focused not only on restoring infrastructure but also on building a resilient, efficient, and people- centered system that guarantees access to safe water for everyone,” he said.

The Commissioner added that, through the SURWASH program alone, approximately 1.5 million residents have benefited from improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services.

He noted that these reforms are also leading to better public health outcomes and supporting economic activity across the state.

Since 2023, Governor Uba Sani has declared a state of emergency in the sector, accelerating reforms and infrastructure rehabilitation.

Major achievements include clearing ₦900 million in salary arrears owed to Kaduna State Water Corporation staff, procuring 1, 1,300 metric tonnes of treatment chemicals worth ₦ 1. 5 billion—with an additional 3, 500 metric tonnes in progress—and rehabilitating key water facilities across Kaduna, Zaria, Kafanchan, Kwoi, Manchok, and Kagoro under the SURWASH program.

The Commissioner also announced that water production capacity has increased from 450 MLD in 2023 to 530 MLD. 66 MLD in 2025, with over ₦16 billion invested in fully rehabilitating six major treatment plants.

The administration has expanded pipeline networks, built new reservoirs, and installed essential equipment to stabilize supply systems.

The Kaduna State Government has further strengthened sector management through automated billing systems and recovered ₦5. 74 billion in matching funds for the Zaria Water Project, and is currently reviewing the State Water Law.

The Commissioner reiterated Governor Uba Sani’s dedication to maintaining these improvements and ensuring fair access to clean, safe water for all residents.
