WRAPA trains 400 court judges on marriage reconciliation

The Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) with the support of MacArthur Foundation has embarked on training of 400 court judges from Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara states on how best access and protection for women under Islamic law could be improved.
Speaking at the opening ceremony held at City King Hotel in Gusau Zamfara state capital yesterday, the Project Director, Hajiya Saudatu Mahdi said, the 2- day training workshop has become imperative considering high rate of women abuse in marriages by multitude number of husbands due to lack of knowledge on rules laid by Islam on marriage.
Hajiya Mahdi, who emphasized the need for the participants to prudently handle matrimonial cases before their respective courts as according to the teachings of Islam Informed that, many cases were supposed to be won by women but usually lost due to either poor presentation or lost out for absolute shy attitude.
“Part of the project embarked upon by WRAPA is for the Judges while attending to matrimonial cases before their courts to always take persuasive steps with maturity until the real grudges presented by the wives are clearly understood for due justice,” Hajiya Mahdi has said.
The focus as according to the project director, is mainly for restoration of the lost cordial relationship between the husbands and wives, and to ensure the matrimonial rights confered on women by Islamic religion are properly practice in the competent sharia courts across the zone.
She said, the project has much concern on educating men about rules and regulations surrounding marriage so much that women consent would be respected, adding that, “Unlike the beliefs by number of men that, women have very limited rights to deserve taking part of decision makings in running the affairs of home.
