Yobe NBA inaugurates 8- member executive council

An eight member executive council of the Nigeria Bar Association, was yesterday inaugurated to take care of the activities of the association for the next two years.
The new council is headed by Dr. Abubakar Kagu as chairman, and Abbagana Mai Dodo as the Secretary- General.
In his inaugural lecture, Justice Ibrahim W. Jauro, who conducted the swearing in of the new members, spoke at length in defining the roles of the Bar in a democratic setting, pointing out the aims and objectives of the Nigeria Bar association which he said includes among other things; maintenance and defense of the integrity and independence of the Bar and the judiciary in Nigeria.
Others, he said, are encouragement and protection of the right of access o courts at reasonably affordable fees and representation by counsel before courts and tribunals, promotion and protection of the principles of the rule of law and respect for enforcement of fundamental rights, human rights and people’s right.
He urged lawyers to see themselves as vanguards of democracy with the responsibility to checkmate the activities of the three arms of government in the discharge of their duty so as to hold the government responsible for its actions and inactions.
In his address, the outgoing chairman of the association, Barrister Bashir Salihu, while congratulating the incoming executive council, also commended members for not only giving the outgoing executive council the opportunity to serve, but for working together in carrying on the activities of the union.
Speaking also, the newly elected chairman, Dr.Abubakar Kagu, assured the members that they would continue from where the outgoing leadership stopped, pointing out that they have laid a good foundation for the new executives to improve upon in order to move the association to a greater height.
